1980年茨城県生まれ。グラフィックデザインや描き文字の活動を経て、作家としての活動を開始。
日本の暦や年中行事、風習、信仰など暮らしの中に息づいてきた民衆文化を主題に作品を制作する。
古い史料や文献を読み解きながら、そこに記された人々の生活や祈り、願い、遊びに目を向け名もなき人々によって受け継がれてきた感覚を現代の視点から捉え直している。
現在の表現の出発点は文字を描くことにある。
表意文字である漢字を意味を伝える記号としてではなく「かたち」として捉え原型をわずかに残しながら解体、再構成する試みを重ねてきた。
その経験はやがて絵画へと広がり、現在は絵と文字、かたちと意味のあわいを往還する独自の表現へと展開している。
制作において重要なのは、過去の風俗や意匠をそのまま再現することではない。
祭り、祈り、踊り、遊びといった人々が繰り返してきた営みの奥にある感覚を拾い
いまを生きる私たちへと引き寄せること。
先人たちが築き名もなき人々が日々の暮らしの中で受け渡してきた文化の層を辿りながら現代にも連続する「民」の姿を描いている。



Hideji Terada

Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1980. After working in graphic design and hand-drawn lettering, he began his practice as an artist.

His work explores the folk culture that has long been embedded in everyday life in Japan, drawing on the traditional calendar, annual observances, customs, and beliefs. Through the study of historical records and literature, he turns his attention to the lives, prayers, wishes, and play of people in the past, reconsidering from a contemporary perspective the sensibilities that have been passed down through generations of unnamed individuals.

The starting point of his current practice lies in drawing characters. Rather than treating kanji—ideographic characters—as signs that simply convey meaning, he approaches them as forms in themselves, repeatedly dismantling and reconstructing their structures while retaining subtle traces of their original shapes.

This practice gradually expanded into painting, developing into a distinctive visual language that moves between image and character, form and meaning.

What matters in his work is not the reproduction of historical customs or motifs themselves. Instead, he seeks to uncover the sensibilities that lie beneath the recurring acts of human life—festivals, prayer, dance, and play—and bring them into the present.

Tracing the layers of culture shaped by those who came before us and carried forward through the everyday lives of countless unnamed people, his work portrays the enduring presence of the folk that continues into contemporary life.
