HIDEJI TERADA

Hideji Terada

Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1980.

His work explores the folk traditions embedded in everyday life in Japan, drawing on the Japanese calendar, annual observances, customs, and beliefs.

Rather than simply reproducing the customs and motifs of the past, his practice seeks to uncover the sensibilities that lie beneath the prayers, festivals, games, and other everyday acts repeated over generations by ordinary people, bringing them into the present through a contemporary perspective.

Tracing the layers of culture shaped by those who came before us, he portrays the enduring presence of the people—the tami—whose lives and sensibilities continue in an unbroken line into the present.
